A string of thefts at Edmonton condo parkades is prompting city police to warn residents to remove valuables from their vehicles.

Police in a Friday news release said more than 90 thefts from vehicles were reported in January at parkades in neighbourhoods such as Garneau, Strathcona, Ermineskin and the Hamptons. Nine separate incidents happened at condos near 85 Avenue and 111 Street and 46 Avenue and 199 Street.

Police said thieves are getting access to parkades from methods including opening parkade garage doors, prying open side doors, lockbox break-ins and overhead door tampering. Recently, suspects have been tampering with vestibule intercom systems and then taking the elevator to the parkade.

Some of the valuables taken by the thieves include bicycles, laptops, phones and purses.

Police are encouraging residents to remove valuables from their vehicles and for condo managers to install tougher security measures including swipe card access to elevators and interior doors to parkades.

Police offered some tips to stay safe:

    • Do not leave anything in view in vehicles
    • Wait for the door to close in a parkade
    • Carry registration and insurance with you, don’t leave it in the vehicle
    • Don’t leave garage door openers in the vehicle
    • Edmonton Police Service offers free anti-theft bolts for license plates, available at any police station
    • Don’t leave spare keys in the vehicle
    • Consider using a club to secure the steering wheel
